Yankees Pitcher CC Sabathia Exits Game Early With Sore Hip

He was slated to have an MRI later Friday night.

Alvarez hit a grand slam, Manny Machado homered twice and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Yankees 7-3 on Friday night after NY saw four players forced to make early exits.

Drury and Wade were replaced in the sixth and ninth, respectively. Nothing immediately was announced, but Wade had been feeling under the weather since last week's season-opening series in Toronto, so that could be his issue. He entered the day batting.222 (6-for-27) with his only extra-base hit coming in the first inning on Opening Day.

Yet another injury for the Yankees is not what this ballclub needed, especially from starting pitcher CC Sabathia with right hip soreness.

Two batters later, Pedro Alvarez hit a pinch-hit, grand slam off Jonathan Holder, the Yankees' eighth pitcher.

The Yankees got the return in the bottom of the inning on gian-carlo Stanton's broken-bat single that scored Brett Gardner out of moment, but Sabathia was hit by Machado all over again in the third.

Then on a wild pitch that got past Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph, Gregorius ran home.

- Baltimore loaded the bases against Chasen Shreve in the 12th, but the left-hander also struck out Rasmus to end that jam.

The 37-year-old threw 58 pitches over four innings.

And yet all of this, and there was a lot, was overshadowed to an extent by the condition of Sabathia, who surrendered three long home runs while he was in the game (two of them by Manny Machado). The Yankees will 100% be one of those teams, and if they land him then his tendency to tear apart pitching staffs like this (especially Sabathia) will just be a fun memory. Luis Cessa and Domingo German are presumably the first fill-in candidates. He allowed four hits and no walks, striking out three.

For Saturday's game, if Sabathia is DL'd, the Yankees likely will call up a reliever to give them a fresh arm in their exhausted bullpen.

Yankees: OF Aaron Hicks (strained ribcage) will play Sunday and Monday with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and Boone hopes to have him with NY by the middle of next week. Moran's two-run single with two outs in the third inning just dropped in front of diving center fielder Billy Hamilton and put the Pirates ahead for good at 4-2. He took a no-decision in his debut after allowing one earned run in five innings. He had just 25 free passes in 136 games previous year.

Third base umpire Ron Kulpa only called out Stanton, though, and after the umpires conferred, the call stood. (0-0, 1.80) vs. LHP Jordan Montgomery (0-0, 1.80).

Saturday: Baltimore Orioles at Yankees, 1:05 p.m., YES.
