With Getaround's model, auto owners decide for how long they want to make their vehicle available for rental. "I think Silicon Valley is understanding that with building these platforms comes the responsibility to make sure that those platforms are being used for good".

The proposal would increase the tax on rides originating from the District for companies such as Uber and Lyft from 1 percent to 4.75 percent.

Under the new terms, Uber is now required to submit every audit report of its privacy program to the FTC, as opposed to only submitting the initial audit report.

Khosrowshahi wouldn't say when the company might resume testing or what might have gone wrong; he said the company was cooperating with federal investigators and dealing "very seriously" with the incident. The money raised from this tax would help fund Metro.

"The fact is that human beings are sometimes good, and sometimes not", Khosrowshahi said.

Working with the car-sharing company Getaround, it is expected to start later this month in San Francisco.

The crash has raised questions about the lack of clear safety standards for such vehicles but, speaking at a transport forum, Khosrowshahi said Uber was still betting on the technology in the long term. Uber paid $100,000 through the third party that administers Uber's "bug bounty" program. This new service opens even more doors for your transportation needs; literally. "Anytime you're growing as fast as we were growing. but that's not an excuse, and sometimes you get things wrong".

The deal to acquire Jump Bikes, a bike-sharing startup offering dockless electric bicycles, was announced 9 April. Users can rent out their cars and rent other people's through the peer-to-peer software that will integrate onto the Uber app, with renters charged by the hour or for a whole day.

"We believe these rewards will help drivers have a better driving experience when using the Uber app", said Uber's general manager for East Africa Loic Amado.

Chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi presented the plans during a visit to Washington, where he said the ride-hailing pioneer would seek a more diversified model offering various transport options, including vehicle rentals on a partner peer-to-peer service.

In a speech, Khosrowshahi said the initiatives are designed so that Uber moves beyond just being a vehicle service and provides city residents with options on a variety of modes of transportation. The service will also include integration of transit maps and schedule information in selected cities.

It will also add an emergency button to call 911 from inside the app. "I don't really ride the Metro", said one customer. This new feature will also be available for the passengers to ensure more safety while taking an Uber ride.

"Imagine there's a car-sharing network that has cars every half a mile", Khanna said.
