"It's my honor to induct into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Hugh McDonald, Tico Torres, Sir Alec John Such, David Bryan, Richie Sambora and the one and only, Jon Bon Jovi".

Simone received a passionate and show-stopping tribute from groundbreaking performers who she has deeply inspired, from Lauryn Hill to Mary J. Blige.

Jon Bon Jovi, who gave a 20-minute speech onstage, said he has been writing his Rock Hall speech for years.

"It's an honor to be here tonight, ladies and gentlemen", Stern said during his speech. Day sang Simone's "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" and Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You", which Simone famously covered. "In the end, it's all about time. We played in the local talent show, came in second place, worked up to block dances and then the clubs where we got a glimpse of what we thought was the big time".

Sambora, who left the nj group in 2013, and Alec John Such, who left 1994, adopted their bandmates later each talked to accept the honour.

The original group, along with current members Phil X, John Shanks and Everett Bradley, then teamed up to perform You Give Love a Bad Name, It's My Life, When We Were Us and Livin' on a Prayer.

Here's a rare recording of "Rocket 88", considered by some the first ever rock single, performed by the James Cotton Blues Band on June 15, 1973.

The jazzy and soulful Simone, who died in 2003, was a leader in pushing for civil rights and influenced the likes of Alicia Keys and Aretha Franklin.

The evening was opened by the Killers, who marked the 2017 passing of Tom Petty with a version of his early favourite with the Heartbreakers, "American Girl.' The passing of Chris Cantrell was acknowledged with a take on Soundgarden's 'Black Hole Sun" by Heart's Ann Wilson and Alice In Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell. Her brother, Sam Waymon, accepted the induction on his sister's behalf. There was no performance following the band members' speeches. "I've actually written it many ways, many times". She was a pioneering guitarist who performed gospel music and was known to some as "the godmother of rock "n" roll".

Overall, while this year's Induction Ceremony didn't have the star power of previous evenings held in Cleveland, the high-profile event had its moments.

Bon Jovi will be inducted along with Dire Straits, the Moody Blues, Nina Simone and others.

As Rolling Stone notes, following a "hilarious" speech from presenter Howard Stern, the members of the group spoke about their history in the band, and what their induction means to them.
