At least seven inmates are dead and 17 other people are injured after hours-long rioting at a maximum-security prison in SC, according to the state's corrections department.

No officers were injured, said Jeffrey Taillon, communications director for the South Carolina Department of Corrections. "That's why we need the FCC to allow us to block the signals, or the cell phone company to come to us with a technology to allow us to control these signals".

A pilot program authorized using scheduled overtime pay in five medium- and maximum-security prisons to cover staff shortages during officer shift changes "and at other critical times when inmates were moving about the institutions", the agency said.

The inmates who were killed during an incident at Lee Correctional Institution have been identified as RAYMOND ANGELO SCOTT, MICHAEL MILLEDGE, DAMONTE MARQUEZ RIVERA, EDDIE CASEY JAY GASKINS, JOSHUA SVWIN JENKINS, COREY SCOTT, CORNELIUS QUANTRAL MCCLARY.

Few details were offered about what had actually happened inside the facility, which is maximum security and houses around 1,600 inmates, according to Department of Corrections records. The 17 inmates injured during the incident are still being treated.

Local fire and rescue officials said that they were responding to a "mass casualty incident" Monday morning at the Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, which serves as a state prison for men.
