Senate Holds Confirmation Hearing For Mike Pompeo To Be Secretary Of State

Pompeo is answering questions at his confirmation hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. But he ducked and dodged when asked whether he supports President Donald Trump's pounding criticism of the federal investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Booker raised a troubling statement that Pompeo once made as a congressman in which he called homosexuality "perversion" during a speech he made as a congressman. Trump fired Comey less than two months later.

As to the Taiwan Travel Act that took effect in March to bolster exchanges of visits by Taiwanese and USA officials at all levels, Pompeo gave no answer when Gardner asked him: "What level would you authorize State Department personnel to visit Taiwan?"

"If there's no chance that we can fix it, I will recommend to the president that we work with our allies to achieve a better outcome and to achieve a better deal", Pompeo said. He then said he couldn't recall exactly what was discussed at that meeting. "He has never asked me to do anything that I consider remotely improper". When Menendez continued to press on whether Trump had discussed the Russian Federation probes with him, Pompeo answered: "I spoke with Special Counsel Mueller". Lawmakers are concerned the president may seek Mueller's ouster to try to shut down the investigation, and the White House has said it believes Trump does have the authority to fire him if desired.

"Senator, again I'm not going to talk about private conversations I've had with the president", Pompeo said.

"I haven't given that question any thought".

"I think it's important as much as America has done for quite some time".
