VK Singh told India Today, "I have the mortal remains of 38 Indians with me". The families have been informed of his arrival.

Singh would leave for Baghdad in a special C-17 plane.

"I will be flying straight to Amritsar followed by Patna and Kolkata", he said.

The bodies of the 39 Indian workers abducted and killed in Iraq will be flown back to India on Monday. "They won't have to come to the airport", said the former Army chief.

On March 20, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj had informed Parliament that the bodies of the 39 Indians who had gone missing in Mosul in 2014 had been found in a mass grave in Badoosh.

Making a statement on the issue in Lok Sabha recently, Sushma Swaraj had hailed the role of VK Singh in ascertaining the identity of the Indians who got killed in Iraq.

Earlier on Saturday, Singh said that the legal procedures of obtaining the mortal remains of the 39 Indians killed in Iraq had been completed and New Delhi was waiting for Baghdad to give the green signal. "We can't bring the mortal remains of Raju Yadav but we will bring rest of the five to Patna". Of the 38 confirmed dead, 27 were from Punjab, four from Himachal Pradesh, five from Bihar and two from West Bengal.

One of them escaped the clutches of Islamic State by posing as a Muslim from Bangladesh.

In July past year, Swaraj had firmly said in the Parliament that she would not declare the 39 Indians dead without concrete proof or evidence.
