President Trump will 'probably' skip White House Correspondents' Dinner - again

President Donald Trump made a surprise call into Bernie and Sid in the Morning today and said he'll most likely bail on the White House Correspondents Dinner again.

Talev said that while Trump would not attend the dinner, the White House had said the president would "actively encourage members of the executive branch to attend and join us as we celebrate the First Amendment", which guarantees freedom of speech.

"Honored that I'll be attending the White House Correspondents Dinner for the first time this year", she tweeted in March.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders speaks during a press briefing at the White House in Washington on April 4, 2018.

Traditionally the president and first lady attend the annual dinner, a fundraiser for college scholarships and a venue for reporting awards, which mixes politicians, journalists and celebrities.

President Trump told "Bernie & Sid in the Morning" on 77-WABC in NY during a phone interview on Friday morning that it's "unlikely" he will "do the White House correspondents' dinner this year", before adding the news media is "so bad and so fake".

Trump himself will not attend, for the second year in a row.

Trump has repeatedly attacked the media, and often dubs news outlets that report critically on his administration as "fake news".

He skipped it in 2016, which came amid the presidential campaign and was the last of the dinners at which Mr Obama was the honoured guest.

Last year, Trump bailed - opting to hold a campaign-style rally on the same night as the soiree.

"So much of the media is dishonest and corrupt!" he wrote.

A spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council said the delay was not tied to the tensions over Qatar, adding that, "President Trump is committed to resolving the Gulf dispute this month". He also declined an invite past year.

"Donald Trump has been saying that he will run for President as a Republican - which is surprising, since I just assumed that he was running as a joke", Meyers told the crowd.
