He said he told his wife he was going to check the numbers and joked that "If I win you're going to hear a huge scream, we're leaving on vacation, we're going to retire", he said.

Richard Wahl bought the sole winning ticket for the March 30 jackpot at a Lukoil station in Riverdale, New Jersey.

The payout is the largest single lottery win claimed in the state and the fourth-largest payout in Mega Millions history.

Wahl plans to hire a financial advisor to help him manage the money. The odds of winning a Mega Millions jackpot is 1 in 303 million.

"I went over and looked at that one", Wahl told reporters Friday, before pausing briefly as tears welled up in his eyes. And I wasn't ready to share with her yet, so I told her, "Absolutely not, mother"'. "It was truly fantastic".

Mega Millions is played in 44 states plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Players had been vying for the growing jackpot since January.

The victor of a $533 million lottery jackpot wasn't sure he could believe his eyes.

It's the 10th largest lottery jackpot in USA history.

Wahl, originally from Vernon, Michigan, now lives in New Jersey.

He revealed himself as the mystery victor during Friday's news conference at New Jersey Lottery headquarters in Trenton.

If the victor chooses the cash option, he or she will receive a little more than $324 million. If he could have stayed private, he would have, Wahl said, but New Jersey doesn't allow that.

It's "life-changing money", he said, even though he has a good job with a steady income.

"For us we believe God has a's not only life-changing money for me, we want it to be life-changing money for others".
