Mechanic has leg broken by vehicle during errant pit stop

But Mercedes pressured the Scuderia into a tactical change after putting both Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton on medium tyres, with Vettel being told of the decision with 20 laps remaining. "He is now recovering with the best assistance", Ferrari tweeted.

The Italian later posted another of him standing on crutches.

"With Bottas' pace I thought he would catch me".

The win was Vettel's second in succession at the start of 2018 but the manner of victory was in stark contrast to his somewhat fortunate success in Australia two weeks previously.

"I saw him before he started braking, he turned inside".

Raikkonen attempted to leave a pit stop before all four of his tires were safely attached and his rear left wheel hit a member of the crew, with video showing the mechanic's leg buckling horribly. While the incident abruptly ended the race for Raikkonen, the mechanic was attended by the paramedics and taken to the hospital and is now recovering.

Vettel was now left alone to fight at the front of the pack against both Mercedes drivers, but began to up his pace to extend the gap out to Bottas.

Mercedes' decision to go for the more durable medium tyres and a one-stop strategy, compared to Ferrari's move to bolt on softer rubber in anticipation of a two-stop race, brought the evening alive.

"A bit sad because one of our mechanics got injured", Vettel said. Anyway, there's not much I can do now but wait for the next race, where we'll try to do our best'. Raikkonen came in a lap later, with the Ferraris falling to P3 and P4 before leader Bottas stopped on lap 20. Nothing else, just a big thanks. But, Bottas was quicker off the line and passed Kimi's Ferrari before turn 1.

However, he just wasn't able to get that final 0.7s.

The result means Vettel leads the championship on 50 points, 17 ahead of Hamilton and 28 ahead of Bottas.

"This grand prix confirms that the Scuderia has a great auto, a solid team and two drivers on top form".

Between Gasly and Alonso it was fifth and sixth for Magnussen in the Haas and Hulkenberg in the Renault, with Vandoorne in the McLaren following Alonso home in eighth, Ericsson grabbing points for Sauber in ninth and Ocon grabbing the last points place.
