Konami announce new Castlevania game but… it's a mobile app

When Grimoire of Souls releases, players will be able to enter the world as franchise characters Alucard, Simon, Charlotte, Shanoa, and Maria.

The story is pretty simple: after the defeat of Count Dracula, it seemed like eternal peace had finally descended upon the world.

Konami has revealed a brand new entry into one of their most iconic and long running franchises. Grimoire of Souls will feature Genya Arikado as its protagonist as he attempts to stop Dracula from resurrecting into the mortal realm yet again. 2010's Castlevania: Harmony of Despair toyed with the idea and was actually quite fun, so maybe Grimoire of Souls will be worthwhile.

Konami describes the gameplay as "Exhilarating battles where up to four players can cooperate". Strengthen your favorite character and take on the powerful enemies that block your path forward! Characters and music from throughout the franchise's history will also be represented. You'll moslty control the main character, Genya Arikado. Grimoire of Souls is a side-scrolling action game with a cooperative mode and boss rush for up to four players, as well as a competitive mode that pits four against four.

The game's official website is taking applications for a closed beta test for iOS device users, and applicants will be contacted in mid-May. Only a few people know of this group and they have the ability to fight Dracula. He's flanked by Lucy, a researcher who's partnered with Genya.

Once a release date and more details arrive, we'll be sure to post an update. It is her laboratory that Mr. Arima is staying.

While this could have been much, much worse, it's another reminder that Konami really doesn't seem to be interested in releasing a significant new Castlevania title for consoles.
