The gold rush continued in weightlifting for India as Punam Yadav added a fifth to the tally with a top finish in the 69kg category of the 21st Commonwealth Games here today. Batra had a great start and an 11-7 win in the first game gave her the much-needed momentum.

Canada fought strongly for possession and were impressive in defence against New Zealand throughout the game.

However, she recovered to lift 122 kg in her third attempt and Vavai's failure at that same weight put the Indian in the leading position for the gold.

The gold medal was taken by Steven Kari from Papua New Guinea with his combined lift of 370kg, including a final successful 216kg lift in clean and jerk.

Paddler Manika Batra inspired India to a historic gold medal with her stunning singles victories, fashioning an unthinkable 3-1 win over formidable Singapore in the final of the women's team event at the Commonwealth Games.

It was India's 12th medal at Gold Coast in Australia - seven gold, two silver and three bronze. For Vikas, the medal was a climbdown from the 2014 edition where he had claimed a silver with a lesser lift of 333kg. In the clean and jerk rounds, her lifts were 100 kg and 105kg respectively.

Thakur added a second Commonwealth Games medal to his name, extending India's overall tally at the Gold Coast Games to 11.

Earlier in the day, weightlifter Punam Yadav won gold in the Women's 69kg weightlifting category.

Venkat Rahul Ragala yesterday earned India the fourth Gold medal after lifting 338 kilograms in the Men's 85 kg category. Punam started slowly, lifting 95 kg in her opening attempt.

Batra then proved to be too good for Yihan, who failed to read her deceptive strokes. She maintained a neck-to-neck competition with Vaivai, who registered a lift of 97kg to take the lead. But failing at 122 kg in her second attempt put her in a spot of bother.
