At that point, Bottas held a narrow lead over Vettel after undercutting the pole-sitting Ferrari at the first round of pit-stops. No one could have ever predicted that after the way the team has dominated F1 since 2014 and the form they showed in pre-season testing.

With AP Photos.Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull won Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix to claim the sixth victory of his Formula One career.

Now running on the Medium compound tyre, Verstappen quickly lit up the timesheets, forcing Mercedes to bring Bottas in two laps later for fear of losing the position. The Red Bull team could not hide their delight, imploring the Australian to now challenge Vettelfor second spot. Kimi Raikkonen was third for Ferrari. But around the 33rd lap, back markers Pierre Gasly and his Toro Rosso teammate, Brendon Hartley, collided at turn 14, throwing debris all over the hairpin. It resulted in Gasly punting the right-rear section of his teammate's vehicle, which resulted in many bits of sharp carbon-fibre being strewn all over that section of the race track. And that is where the race turned on its head.

Pilot Red bull Daniel Riccardo in bright style became the victor of the third race of the season in Formula 1.

Mercedes and Ferrari chose to leave their cars on medium-compound tyres that by then were about 10 laps old, but Red Bull made a decision to switch to fresh softs and that gave them a decisive pace advantage.

The collision that saw the safety auto deployed was deemed to be Pierre Gasly's fault, and he was given a ten-second penalty.

Ricciardo's iconic "Shoey" made a return to the podium as Aston Martin Red Bull Racing team celebrated the victory together.

Defending F1 champion Lewis Hamilton finished fourth while Ricciardo's teammate, Max Verstappen, was fifth.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel on his crash with Max Verstappen: "I didn't see him until late and left a bit of room". Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) +8,8943.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo has emerged victor of the Formula One Chinese Grand Prix ahead of Mercedes Valteri Bottas and Ferrari's Kimi Räikkönen. Raikkonen took a few good looks but ultimately was just under 0.8 seconds behind Bottas at the finish with Verstappen another 0.8 seconds behind him on the road.

However then Verstappen got over-eager again and when he tried to get ahead of Vettel he touched and they both spun, allowing Raikkonen and Hamilton to get ahead.

Carlos Sainz Jr. gave Renault a double-points finish by finishing ninth ahead of Haas' Kevin Magnussen, who completed the points in P10.

Ricciardo made the most of a mid-race safety auto and race strategy to charge from sixth to the lead of the race and claim his and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing's first win of the year. And Verstappen passed Hamilton too, taking fourth.

Hamilton leaves China second in the championship, and just nine points behind Vettel, but he wasn't happy after what he called "a disaster" of a weekend.

But the safety auto threw in a curve ball and Red Bull grabbed their chance.
