Griezmann's goal came on his 200th appearance for Atleti while Ronaldo's was the 500th in the 161 league matches played between these two city rivals.

Sergio Ramos nearly snatched a win in injury time but his free-kick was brilliantly clawed out by Oblak to ensure that the points were shared in a result which leaves La Liga leaders Barcelona 11 points clear of Atletico with seven games remaining.

In comparison to recent versions of this fixture, which have included Champions League finals, Cope del Rey finals and league games with both sides vying for the championship, this at times had a rather low-key feel.

But they broke through early in the second, Ronaldo smashing home in the 53rd minute after Bale had got away down the left. The ball cannoned off the woodwork into the path of Real's other full-back, Dani Carvajal, and he forced Oblak into a smart save with a well-hit volley.

"It was just to rest", Zidane said, explaining Ronaldo's withdrawal ahead of next week's Champions League quarter-final meeting with Juventus.

Real were convinced they should have had a penalty after 11 minutes when Toni Kroos went down inside the penalty area following a collision with Juanfran.

Atleti were then on the charge and Koke should have put them ahead before the withdrawals of Ronaldo and Diego Costa for either side saw the offensive threat subside - much to the delight of those watching on in Catalonia.

Atletico have exclusively completed above their extra illustrious neighbors as soon as within the final 22 years, but heading into this weekend's sport they maintain a 4 level benefit over Zine dine Zidane's males.

But Antoine Griezmann equalised on the rebound after Vitolo's shot was saved by Keylor Navas.

Real were more aggressive in the search for a late victor but Atleti dug in.

Simeone's what-we-have-we-hold move nearly backfired when Bale skewed wide, while Sergio Ramos made his regular pitch to be Madrid's last-ditch hero - forcing Oblak to push a wonderful free-kick behind in stoppage time and powering over from the resulting corner. If only Ronaldo had still been on the field to take it.
