Wenger relieved at Arsenal win in Milan after nightmare week

The win at the San Siro followed four successive defeats for the Gunners, including a 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.

Milan struggled to turn their possession into meaningful chances and they were punished again seconds before the interval, when Ramsey beat the offside trap to score his seventh goal of the season.

Under the guidance of former midfield stalwart Gennaro Gattuso, Milan have expereicened an upturn in form which has seen them go 12 games unbeaten. The Armenia worldwide ensured it did not go to waste, maintaining his fine Europa League goalscoring record with a little help from a Leonardo Bonucci deflection.

Aaron Ramsey deservedly doubled their lead before half-time, collecting Mesut Ozil's piercing pass through the centre of Milan's defence to round keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and tap in.

It seemed justified as they pinned Arsenal back in the opening few minutes - but that was as hard as it got for the Gunners.

"I always want to control the game, give assists and help my team", Ozil told Goal in an interview last season.

Leonardo Bonucci felt Milan were "too anxious and made too many simple errors" against Arsenal, then paid an emotional tribute to Davide Astori. "I feel the most comfortable playing as a number 10 because I've done it since I was young".

They also haven't played in over a week, which isn't great for an Arsenal team that has played three times in just over that same time frame and are missing some key pieces.

Arsenal earned their first win in the opening leg of a last-16 European tie since February 2011 (2-1 v Barcelona in the Champions League).

Conversely, the Gunners are coming off the back of four defeats - leaving their top four ambitions in tatters.
