Trump Fired Tillerson for 'Rogue' Effort to Fix Iran Nuke Deal

In a private room in China's Great Hall of the People in November, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson sat with President Donald Trump and other US officials as their hosts delivered plates of wilted Caesar salad.

The elevation of Deputy Director of the CIA Gina Haspel, a 30-year veteran of the agency, to be its first female director is both historic and wise.

"The worry about it is first, just more chaos from an administration that wants to cut diplomacy funding, that won't send us ambassadorial nominees, that sends out insane tweets, even about the leaders of our friendly nations, much less our adversaries", said Kaine.

With Pompeo taking the helm of the State Department, Watanabe expects that Washington will be able to beef up "negotiating power".

"I think Secretary Tillerson unfortunately chose to focus on restructuring and slashing funding in the State Department, and that took some of his focus off of developing and delivering to the people of the United States, and to the Senate, a clear-eyed strategy for how to deal with these significant challenges", Coons told reporters. When you look at the Iran deal; I think it's awful, I guess he thought it was OK. Our understanding is that the disagreement had something to do with North Korea issues, or just a general accumulation of disagreements. Trump was reportedly particularly irked with Tillerson over his negative news coverage, according to the Post.

Former CIA Director Michael Hayden suggests that Trump and Pompeo share a similar worldview, which has pluses and minuses.

Beijing is believed to have a positive assessment of Tillerson, who was seen as a light touch in contrast to Trump's "good cop, bad cop" routine of slamming Beijing on Twitter while simultaneously flattering its leadership in person.

More consequentially for Canada, it's hard to imagine him as a counterweight to the protectionists dominating Mr. Trump's cabinet table. "No one has a stronger relationship with President Trump than Mike Pompeo".

About that personal aide: "President Trump's personal assistant was sacked after he was denied a security clearance because of financial problems related to online gambling and tax issues, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday". For example, Mr Tillerson had urged Mr Trump not to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement, or to back Saudi Arabia's campaign against Qatar, or to move the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem, all of which Mr Trump has done.

"I'll be on the committee that will interview him", Kaine said, when asked if that meant he wouldn't vote to confirm Pompeo. "I didn't like the way Rex Tillerson was sacked".

This appointment came just after he agreed to talks with the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"We were not really thinking the same", said Trump.

"I think most Republicans realize we're running into a very serious, a hurricane-force wind", he explained.

Bigger questions loom about Pompeo's ability to counteract Trump's often unpredictable decision-making processes.
