It was another snag in the return for the 30-year-old Djokovic who was playing in just his second event of 2018.

A bemused-looking Novak Djokovic described his feeling on the court during his three-set defeat to world No. 109 Taro Daniel as "very weird" and that "it felt like first match I ever played on the tour".

"I was grateful to be out on the court after surgery that quickly". Just struggled also a little bit with (my) health the last couple of weeks.

Federer improved to 65-5 since returning from a left knee injury previous year with his third-round victory in a rare day match Monday.

Last year's US Open runner-up Anderson sent down 22 aces, while Kicker only managed one in the third-round battle.

On Krajinovic, Federer said: "I still think he can play much better than he did today".

It should be noted that Federer is bidding to snap his own mark as the oldest player to ever win the tournament, after setting the record past year.

Sela also took the second set by the same score to seal a 6-4 6-4 victory in 91 minutes against world number 24 Edmund, who replaced the injured Andy Murray as British number one earlier this month.

The 12-time major victor led 5-2 in the opener, but Daniel fought back well to clinch the first set on a tie-break, and although Djokovic pulled level, 61 unforced errors from the five-time champion saw Daniel clinch victory after two-and-a-half hours. "When you go from night to day, (normally you are) playing a different opponent, so naturally, it's all a change".

"You can't really look ahead to semi-finals, finals and speculate about who you could play", he told reporters.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion has enjoyed a flawless start to 2018 winning the Australian Open and ABN Amro World Tennis Tournament in Rotterdam, and is bidding to claim a record sixth title - his 28th Masters 1000 crown - in the California desert.

"The nighttime is much deader".

"I think that would be a mistake".

Next up for the 23rd seed is Cuevas, who was leading 3-6 6-4 4-2 when Thiem retired hurt.

Gael Monfils upset number 15 seed and 2012 runner-up John Isner 6-7 (5), 7-6 (3), 7-5.
