Donald Trump, press trade jabs at annual Gridiron dinner

Trump pointed out Attorney General Jeff Sessions in the audience - a man the President has criticized relentlessly for removing himself from the investigation into Russian election meddling.

Indeed he does, as only Trump can.

Turning to the media, Trump said he and The New York Times are both New York City icons - "the only difference is I still own my buildings". "And I told them not to worry - nobody does self-deprecating humor better than I do". The president told the journalists in the room that he wanted to "ruin your evening in person". Orrin Hatch - the Utah Republican whose over-the-top praise of Trump after the GOP passed its tax cut bill garnered him some notice - even agreed that he is the best at self-deprecating humor. "We finally have it running like a fine-tuned machine".

Though he poked fun at his own administration's dysfunction ("It's been really another calm week at the White House"), Trump saved some of his sharpest lines for Democrats, including when he said of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA): "She has to immediately take an IQ test". What are you gonna do?

President-elect Donald Trump smiles as he arrives to speak at an Election Night rally, in New York City, Nov. 9, 2016. "I'm a NY icon, you're a NY icon, and the only difference is, I still own my buildings".

"Alec Baldwin, whose dying mediocre career was saved by his bad impersonation of me on SNL, now says playing me was agony", the president wrote, twenty minutes after deleting a similar tweet riddled with typos.

"Lately [Pence is] showing a particularly keen interest in the news these days. He starts out each morning asking everyone, 'Has he been impeached yet?' Mike, you can't be impeached when there's no crime, please remember that". The New Orleans official also observed, "No matter how many times we say it, we don't drain the swamps either". You saw him and his handsome wife on stage before. "I do have a lot of respect for a lot of the people in this room". Besides joking about Pence and Kushner, Trump also slipped in a joke about the rumored state of his marriage in a departure from his usually more serious tone. So I like turnover.

Vice-President Mike Pence: "I really am proud to call him the apprentice. Now, the question everybody keeps asking: Who's going to be the next to leave, Steve Miller or Melania?".

Over the last month, the White House has seen the dismissal of Staff Secretary Rob Porter over spousal abuse allegations and reports - denied by Trump and others - that national security adviser H.R. McMaster is on his way out. Where's Mitch, where the [expletive] are you? By the way, I always knew, someday, you're going to fire her. This swamp I hate. "As far as the risk of dealing with a madman is concerned, that's his problem, not mine".

Referring to his son-in-law Jared Kushner's loss of security clearance, he said, "We were late tonight because Jared could not get through security". "He even told me he would let Ivanka visit the Oval Office when she gets home from representing us in the Olympics and she did so". And he has suffered. In the other job, I was the host of a smash television hit. A lot of people said I wouldn't be able to do so well after losing my so-called chief strategist.
