Punjab University transgender student to join Canadian PM Justin Trudeau for dinner

An Indian government source denied there was a snub in comments reported by several media outlets.

"According to protocol, it is a cabinet minister who receives a visiting foreign leader, and this courtesy was extended to Mr Trudeau", Prakash told BBC, adding that although Modi had in the past broken protocol to greet foreign leaders, he could not be expected to do so each time there was a visitor to India.

Till now, Canadian PM's meeting with Punjab CM Amrinder Singh was not on card when he visits Amritsar later this week.

Confirming the development, Singh tweeted, "Look forward to meeting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in Amritsar on Wednesday".

Canada, meanwhile, will invest $750 million in India.

"There is a lot of room to grow" bilateral trade, Trudeau said at the IIM event.

Canadian High Commissioner to India Nadir Patel hosts a dinner for Trudeau and Canadian ministers - Harjit Sajjan, Amarjeet Sohi, Navdeep Bains and Bardish Chagger - who have accompanied him on this trip.

Briefing about his interactions with the Indian business leaders, he said prospects of Canadian investments in India were also discussed, especially the role played by the pension funds of Canada.

SGPC, an apex religious body of the Sikhs, will honour Trudeau by presenting him a Siropa (robe of honour), a replica of the Golden Temple and a sword, an SGPC official said.

Justin Trudeau was born on December 25, 1971, to the late Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his wife, Margaret.
