Salah set up the Brazilian for the opener just seven minutes in and the Egyptian winger grabbed his 22nd league goal of the season shortly before half-time thanks to a clever assist from Firmino. Mané will look to get back on the score sheet today against his former club.

And this is how things stayed for the remainder of the clash, with the Saints struggling to create clear-cut goalscoring opportunities over the course of the second-half, whereas Liverpool could easily have added to their goal tally through the likes of Salah, Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Despite naming a full-strength team, Klopp will also be keeping one eye out for Liverpool's Champions League first-leg knockout tie away to Porto on Wednesday.

And while they were not at their best, Klopp was left to reflect on a Liverpool performance that improved throughout.

"I enjoyed it a lot", Van Dijk said. Salah's strike was his 21st goal of the seaosn.

"We scored early, got the second goal in the right moment and then controlled the game".

Southampton are unbeaten in their six previous Premier League games played on a Sunday this season, though five of those have ended as draws.

"But Virgil is part of the past and we have to focus on our game and what we have to do".

Despite Liverpool winning the home fixture against the Saints 3-0 in November, previous league meetings between the two have always proved to be tricky - and Southampton will be looking to widen the gap between them and the relegation zone with a huge win. Liverpool will provide a far sterner test. Mohamed Salah continued his fabulous debut campaign with two goals against Tottenham last time out.
