The Israeli air force then launched its attack on 12 further targets inside Syria, Conricus said, all of which were hit.

Syrian state media reported two separate Israeli attacks.

Israel and Syria are technically at war, though the armistice line on the Golan Heights had remained largely quiet for decades until civil war erupted in Syria in 2011.

The Israeli action came following the IDF's announcement that one of its military jets had crashed after coming under fire from anti-aircraft missiles in Syria. The pilots ejected and survived the incident.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel spent much of Saturday in consultations with his defense minister, the Israeli chief of staff, and other military officials.

(1) Military - Iran and its proxies have structured their forces in Syria and Lebanon to guarantee mass casualties during their next war with Israel - In Syria, Hezbollah says it has 10,000 fighters ready to attack Israel and to create a single front across all of Israel's north and northeast. "The government and Syrian army are only defending themselves against Israeli aggression".

"We consider it necessary to unconditionally respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and other countries of the region", it added.

Iran's actions have proven correct all of Israel's warnings against allowing Iran's establishment in Syria. Brig. Gen. Tomer Bar, second-in-command of Israel's air force, told Haaretz newspaper that these strikes were "the biggest and most significant attack the air force has conducted against Syrian air defenses" since the 1982 Lebanon War.

Netanyahu also said that he spoke with US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, noting that Israeli-Russian military coordination vis-a-vis Syria will continue.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said an arms depot that apparently belonged to "Hezbollah" was hit and exploded. "In the past, the Israelis carried out attacks inside Syria but they would not mention anything about the target or even acknowledge attacks". "Iran only provides military advice to Syria", Iranian TV quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi as saying.

In the early hours of this morning, for the first time, Iran infiltrated Israel with a drone.

It said the bases are used by both Iranian and Russian military personnel deployed in support of the regime.

Hezbollah, a Lebanese Islamist political party, said in a statement that the downing of the Israeli jet marks the "start of a new strategic phase".

"We share the concerns of many throughout the region that Iran's destabilising activities. threaten worldwide peace and security, and we seek greater global resolve in countering Iran's malign activities", Rankine-Galloway said.
