USA Today cited two unnamed sources in a story on Wednesday that said a member of Pence's staff had tried to set up a conversation between Rippon and the vice president, but the skater declined.

Vice President Mike Pence's office and the White House have denied claims that gay figure skater Adam Rippon rejected an invitation to meet with Pence in protest against the VP's stance on homosexuality, arguing the invitation was never made in the first place. "Despite these misinformed claims, the vice president will be enthusiastically supporting all the U.S. athletes competing next month in Pyeongchang", press secretary Alyssa Farah said.

In a tweet early Thursday morning, Pence ripped into the media in an attempt to ease the tension with Rippon. I am proud of you and ALL OF OUR GREAT athletes and my only hope for you and all of #TeamUSA is to bring home the gold. "Go get 'em!" Pence told the athlete in a tweet. In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters all sides, not just the two Koreas, needed to work hard and dialogue between the United States and North Korea should be expanded for this to happen, Wang said.

Figure skater Adam Rippon said he wouldn't visit the White House if he was invited after the Winter olympics because he doesn't think he'd be "welcome" as a gay athlete.

USA figure skater Adam Rippon reportedly declined an invitation to meet with Vice President Pence leading up to this month's Winter Olympics in South Korea.

"You mean Mike Pence, the same Mike Pence that funded gay conversion therapy?"

Rippon would did not confirm nor deny the USA Today report on Thursday with reporters, pointing inquiries to the USOC.

In that interview, Rippon added he would prefer not meeting the vice president during the usual meet-and-greet session between the official delegation and the Olympic athletes, which takes place just before the Olympics opening ceremony.

While serving as governor of Indiana, Pence signed the controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act in 2015 which permitted businesses to turn away gay and lesbian customers in the name of religious freedom.

Rippon's public critiques of Pence have extended past those comments he interpreted as supporting gay conversion therapy.

Vice President Mike Pence has arrived in South Korea, looking to push the USA ally to adopt a more hawkish stance toward North Korea ahead of the Winter Olympics.
