Variety reports that talks are underway for Phoenix to play the Joker, while stressing that the two sides are not in the negotiation stage yet. Meanwhile, Matt Reeves ("War for the Planet of the Apes") is still on board to direct a Batman solo movie that is involved in the larger DC extended universe.

First reported by Variety, the three-time Oscar nominee is the top choice for the role. Instead, Warner aiming to create a new imprint to tell stories of other characters in the DC canon, separate from any of their existing cinematic universes.

The most recent portrayal of the Joker comes from Jared Leto in 2016's Suicide Squad with Leto more than likely to reprise the role in Suicide Squad 2.

The actor was also in talks to play Doctor Strange for Disney-owned Marvel Studios, but declined.

Warner Bros. wants to diversify its DC films, and developing stories unconnected to the DCEU frees these projects from the shackles of interconnected world-building, which hasn't gone well for the brand thus far (see: Justice League).

The source also reports that the potential film will take place in the '80s and will have grittier look at crime in Gotham. It's said that this movie will be listed under a new banner of projects for Warner Bros. and DC Comics.

Leonardo DiCaprio was rumoured to be playing the Joker in Phillips' film, but that apparently didn't work out. The Joker has been iconically portrayed by many different actors over the years. I like to think it's not a big deal anymore, but I'll never forget sitting in a screening of Batman Begins and having a guy next to me say after the Joker's card was revealed: "and that leads into the Burton movie".
