Cobra Kai teaser trailer reignites the Karate Kid rivalry for sequel series

Both Ralph Macchio and William Zabka are reprising their roles as Daniel and Johnny but, this time, their rivalry extends to their kids. It's been almost 34 years since moviegoers last saw these two face off at the All Valley Karate Tournament in the hit 1984 film.

YouTube on Thursday released the first footage of its forthcoming Karate Kid TV sequel, Cobra Kai.

Set more than three decades after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, Cobra Kai - if you need a refresher, that's the name of the old dojo - finds Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) living a comfortable life with his family in Encino, running a string of vehicle dealerships.

Apparently Johny's life hasn't been going so well since since they faced off at the All Valley Karate Tournament in the first movie, or met again in "Karate Kid Part II".

This has a much more serious tone than I was expecting, but that's not surprising since YouTube Global Head of Original Content Susanne Daniels told us earlier this year that it was more of a dramedy. Johnny is reviving his old dojo Cobra Kai, and Daniel isn't about to let him without a fight. Whereas Daniel is the picture of stability as a auto dealer and family man.

"We do not train to be merciful here", Johnny said.

Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine) wrote this new story for Cobra Kai with Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg (Harold & Kumar).

So you can understand why his old rival Daniel would disapprove of Cobra Kai being reopened, and why he'd object with Johnny sculpting young minds and fists. Moreover, judging by some familiar rhetoric, Johnny seems to be hitting the Sensei John Kreese Kool-Aid hard, despite the whole "you're a loser", "second place is no place", parking lot choking incident.

Xolo MaridueƱa is Miguel Diaz, who "struggles with bullies at his new school, until he's taken under the wing of a Cobra Kai karate master". Susan Ekins also executive produces along with Will Smith, Caleeb Pinkett, and James Lassiter executive producer for Overbrook Entertainment in association with Sony Pictures Television Studios.
