ADAM LALLANA was sent off for grabbing Tottenham whizkid George Marsh by the throat.

Having been sidelined due to a groin injury for Liverpool's last three games, Adam Lallana would have hoped for a straightforward return to action for the Reds' under-23s on Monday night.

Yesterday, Liverpool first team midfielder Adam Lallana was ejected during a U23 match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur when the midfielder put his hands around the neck of 19-year old Tottenham academy product George Marsh after a hard challenge.

Lallana is 29 years old, a full England worldwide, a former club captain (for Southampton) and a Liverpool first-team fixture.

Cue the obvious red card, while Lallana was dragged away from the scene by his Liverpool team mates.

He was played out of his usual position and while coach Neil Critchley was not exactly glowing about his performance, he insisted he has full faith the young Scot will kick on. He has struggled with injury because of which he has not enjoyed playing time under Jurgen Klopp. Jack Roles scored the only goal that night to help his side win the match.

Liverpool Under-23s actually finished the match with nine men as George Johnston was shown a second booking late on in the defeat, with other notable players included in the Liverpool line-up being strikers Dominic Solanke and Ben Woodburn.
