It also said in an earlier post that the perpetrators needed technology from "countries with high-technological capabilities" and the drones' explosive devices had "foreign detonating fuses".

The attack, which involved 13 drones, was successfully repelled by Russian anti-aircraft defense systems and electronic warfare specialists who managed to hijack the operating systems of six of the drones, landing three of them.

It noted a "strange coincidence" of a USA military intelligence plane flying over the Mediterranean near the two Russian bases at the moment of the attack.

The Russians have been using drone swarms against the Ukrainians to good effect (blowing up ammo dumps). Many opposition groups are refusing to attend, citing increased Russian military interference.

"The drones were launched from the area of Muazzara in the southwestern part of the Idlib de-escalation area controlled by so-called "moderate opposition" units", defence ministry newspaper Krasnaya Zvezda said.

He said advances by the Syrian army and allied forces into Idlib could not have taken place without the support of Moscow and Tehran, which have both backed Assad in the war.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Russian forces were on alert following drone attacks on the Hmeimim base, the largest Russian military base on Syrian territory.

Putin said on December 28 that more than 48,000 Russian military personnel had served in the operation in Syria, and that Russia's presence at Hmeimim and Tartus would be "permanent". In recent months, however, the Russian military brass has become increasingly critical of the USA role in Syria, accusing it of protecting militants who can carry out future battles against Assad - a claim the US has angrily denied.

The Khmeimim has found itself under attack on a number of occasions as the conflict in Syria rages on, with two Russian military personnel killed during a mortar attack on New Year's Eve. It said 10 assault drones had flown toward the air base in northwestern Syria, while another three were directed against the Russian naval station on the Mediterranean Sea.

The Russian and the US militaries have maintained regular contacts to avoid conflict between their forces in Syria. "Such aircraft-type aerial vehicles are available on the open market, so this attack is unique for the level of its organization, rather than for its technological level", the expert said. This was stated by the Russian Defense Ministry, FOCUS reported quoting TASS. At the time, he announced the pullout of Russian troops.

Russian Federation said it was also controlled by Turkish armed forces.
