Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith announced Sunday that he will take an extended leave of absence in order to care for his ailing wife.

We all wish Smith and his wife strength and positive vibes as they deal with her cancer and hope it all ends positively. This was an extremely hard decision for me to make as I love this organization and every member of this team both on and off the field.

Smith has been the GM at Houston for 11 seasons now, and the Texans have gone 88-104 during his tenure.

O'Brien has one season remaining on the five-year contract he signed when taking over as head coach of the Texans in 2014.

However, with the team's present and future quarterback Deshaun Watson has said he wants to play his entire career with O'Brien as his head coach, which could make McNair's decision much tougher.

"That's out of my control, but I would love to have Coach O'Brien with me", Watson said earlier this month.

After Sunday's loss to the Colts, O'Brien called his first losing season as an National Football League coach "absolutely brutal".

Bill O'Brien, who had gained steam as a potential Giants contender were he to become available, "is likely to be back next season" as Texans coach, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

O'Brien has went 9-7 each of his first 3 years until this season and is in his final year of his contract.
