Manhunt underway for suspected cop killer in Washington state

The deputy was shot while chasing the suspects after a home burglary near Tacoma.


Someone called the Sheriff's Office just before 11:30 a.m. saying an intruder was inside a home in Frederickson, a suburb just southeast of Tacoma.

McCartney, a three year veteran of the sheriff's office and a Navy veteran, was shot Sunday evening while responding to a burglary in Frederickson, Washington.

During the call, according to the News-Tribune, dispatchers heard screaming and the sounds of a scuffle.

McCartney was married and had three young sons, according to KOMO-TV.

Authorities launched a dragnet after a Washington state sheriff's deputy was shot and killed while chasing a pair of suspected burglars late Sunday, police said.

After arriving at the scene, McCartney chased an unidentified black male on foot before the suspect shot him and escaped.

The Sheriff Department, in a statement, called McCartney's death "a bad loss". The injured deputy was transported in critical condition to Saint Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma where he later died.

A suspect in the armed robbery was found dead at the scene.

A manhunt for the second suspect is underway.

Officials say numerous streets are being closed in the area as law enforcement conducts a search for the gunman.

The Bethel School District canceled all classes Monday because of the ongoing manhunt, which included authorities blocking roads leading to the district's bus facility and preventing bus drivers from starting their t pickup routes.

No additional information about the home invasion has been released.
