Google cable splash to boost capacity for Australia

Google is expanding its existing cloud network with new data centers this year and new subsea cables in 2019. The fiber-optic cables will cross the globe and be completed by 2019.

"Once deployed, Curie will be Chile's largest single data pipe", said Benjamin Treynor, vice president of Google 24x7 cloud support group in a blog January 16.

One of the cables is called Havfrue and will directly link the U.S.to Ireland and Denmark.

Google's network of undersea cables is growing.

Diane Greene, who heads up Google's cloud unit, often marvels at how much her company invests in Google Cloud infrastructure. But when the search giant wanted to expand its cloud capabilities in both Australia and South America, "there weren't a lot of great options". With Curie, we become the first major non-telecom company to build a private intercontinental cable. According to Google there are some distinct benefits to owning the cable directly. Further, Treynor noted that after the cables are operational, they can easily make routing decisions to optimize for latency and availability.

Google has teamed up with other firms, including domestic telephone operators and Facebook Inc., to build its subsea cables.

Starting with the regions, the Netherlands and Montreal will be opened up in the first quarter, while Los Angeles, Finland, and Hong Kong will follow later on in the year. "As a result, security, networking, and infrastructure were key considerations for us when choosing a cloud provider", said Sri Shivananda, PayPal's SVP and chief technology officer. It has already built several undersea cables as part of a consortium of companies, and will add two more consortium-driven cables over the next few years connecting Denmark to Ireland and Hong Kong to Guam.

Google now has 11 direct investments in cables, which help maintain service in an area in case of server malfunctions.

Google's Cloud platform is already up and running in thirteen regions including Tokyo, Taiwan, Mumbai, Singapore, Sydney, London, Belgium, Frankfurt, Sao Paulo, Oregon, Iowa, Northern Virginia, and SC.

This spending represents approximately $30 billion United States dollars (roughly $37.2 billion CAD) that Google has invested over the past three years to improve its infrastructure around the world.

The system now has a greater total capacity than any other undersea cable, Google SVP of Technical Infrastructure Urs Hölzle revealed in a blog post.
