Sony Michel took a direct snap, headed to his left, broke a tackle near the line of scrimmage and sprinted 27 yards for the winning touchdown as No. 3 Georgia advanced to its first national championship game with a 54-48 double-overtime victory over No. 2 Oklahoma on Monday in front of 92,844 in the Rose Bowl.

"I think it's awesome that it's in the Rose Bowl, so that you get to go out to the Granddaddy of Them All and play in a venue that a lot of these kids in the southeast don't get an opportunity to go to", Georgia coach Kirby Smart said. Additional overtime periods are played if the score is tied at the end of overtime.

That still left the Bulldogs down by two touchdowns, but they got one of them back on their first offensive play of the second half, when Nick Chubb bolted 50 yards for a touchdown. The senior comes into the game with 4,340 passing yards and 41 passing touchdowns and will be eager to make the Sooners' playoff loss to Clemson two years ago a distant memory.

Sony Michel had a 27-yard touchdown run on the second play of the ensuing Georgia possession, and the Bulldogs advanced to the championship game in Atlanta on January 8. After Georgia made its first trip to the Rose Bowl since 1943 a rousing, heart-stopping success, the Bulldogs will play for their first national title since 1980.

The Sooners will be led by fleet-footed quarterback Baker Mayfield, the likely Heisman Trophy victor going against Georgia's physical defense.

Georgia earned a spot with its first SEC title since 2005 under Smart, its second-year coach.

Earlier this week, OU quarterback Baker Mayfield had to sit out from several team events in California due to an illness. "He stretches and extends plays, extremely explosive, not afraid to make any throws". Smith and company just played better.

Georgia's meeting with Oklahoma is the first-ever meeting between the two storied programs. "It's a hell of a college football game". The Sooners defense allowed 144.2 yards on the ground and gave up 20 or fewer points three times in their last four games.

Georgia trailed 31-17 at halftime. "My team just had faith in me", said Michel, who did all that damage on just 11 carries and got a hug from former Bulldogs great tailback Garrison Hearst after scoring the winning TD.

The game was the highest-scoring Rose Bowl, one point more than USC's 52-49 victory over Penn State in the 2017 Rose Bowl.
