Florida minimum wage set to rise Monday

Minimum wage earners in the rest of the state will have their salaries increased to $10.40/hour.

"This is the fourth time that the Fine Gael-led Government has introduced an increase to the minimum wage since it was cut in 2010".

As a broader minimum wage increase for NY workers goes into effect Sunday, fast-food workers in the state will be getting a raise, too.

The new minimum wage would result in an Irish worker taking home a gross income of €1,613.95 per month, and €1,521.57 after tax.

For workers employed by small businesses, it would increase to $15 by December 31, 2019. The minimum wage in Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester counties will increase to $11, while upstate NY will see the minimum wage increase to $10.40. The increase will be phased in over a longer period for workers in the rest of the state.

There is also a misconception that those working minimum wage jobs are mostly young people, but that's not true. Each year, the wage is to increase with a rate of inflation.

Workers employed by big businesses (those with at least 11 employees), will receive a $13 per hour minimum wage, an increase from their $11 wage.

However, the minimum wage increases only apply to restaurants that are part of a chain of 30 or more locations nationwide.

Minimum wage workers are already making more than that in Emeryville, where the minimum wage is $15.20 - reportedly the highest rate in the country. For these employees, the state wage is tied to the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, which requires an act of Congress and the President's signature to change. When the wages increase, it makes it "cost effective" for employers to look for alternatives like self-check outs and other automated systems.
