Residents trying to get rid of a spider in their Redding home Sunday ended up setting their apartment on fire.

Lyndsey Wisegarver, a caregiver to one of the men living in the apartment, said a huge wolf spider continued crawling after it was lit on fire, causing the fire to spread.

The unidentified man set his apartment on fire when a spider he torched with a lighter crawled on a nearby mattress.

Wisegarver said the men had been talking for some time about moving out of the apartment prior to the fire.

The fire, which started shortly before noon in the 2500 block of Waldon Street in downtown, was extinguished within 20 minutes, Pitt said.

This guy from California falls firmly into the latter group, because when he spotted a large spider in his bedroom, he decided the best course of action was to pull out his trusty torch lighter and burn the little bugger.

All the residents escaped from the building, and no one was injured, Pitt said.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before it spread to other units, but it still caused an estimated $11,000 in damages. The residents will now have to find another place to live. They evacuated the building and waited for firefighters to arrive.

She told the newspaper they had been keen to move out anyway.

"We'll make it work", she added.
