Never have the Mega Millions and Powerball jackpots each been worth more than $445 million at the same time until now.

No one has won the big prize since a lucky customer matched all six numbers on October 13 to claim $42 million. Lottery officials also increased the jackpot of Powerball, the other national lottery game, to $570 million.

That makes Saturday's Powerball jackpot, in particular, likely the eighth largest lottery prize ever.

Prasad encouraged me to look to the future, and the Mega Millions ticket I'd just bought for $3, which included the $1 extra payment to double any winnings except for the big jackpot. The drawing will be held Friday night.

Over the last 29 years, the Florida lottery has generated over $96 billion in revenue with more than $32 billion going to education, but where does the rest of the money go? Most winners opt for cash options, which would be $358.5 million for Powerball. The deadline to buy Powerball tickets is 7:00 p.m. Saturday night.

I'm below average, in terms of purchases, spending about $50 a year on lottery tickets.

The Powerball jackpot jumped from $468 million on Wednesday to $550 million on Thursday, after Wednesday night's drawing did not produce a victor.

Two lottery drawings does technically imply more opportunities to win - but really, you should check your hopes at the convenience store counter. One in about 302 million.

If a California Lottery retailer sells a winning ticket, the business will receive one-half of one percent of the jackpot total, up to $1 million.

Dozens of players have come within one number of winning either jackpot in that time, but no one has been able to win it all.

Those sales dropped back to $349 million in 2017, without the lure of a billion-dollar payout. Both games had their most recent jackpot wins in late October.

Wednesday's Powerball had secondary prizes worth $29.97 million.
