The windows were broken both in the morning on southbound buses and in the evening when workers were heading home, police said.

The commuter buses had windows shattered by an unknown object, possibly a rock or a pellet gun. "We received several reports of charter buses being damaged while driving on the I-280, but we're not sure what caused the damage".

Alphabet did not respond to a request for comment. said on Thursday that its shuttles had not been attacked and were running with no changes in service.

Google and Apple employees are looking at having their commute to work extended by 30 to 45 minutes.

Some of the buses were headed north, others were headed south, but they all were hit on I-280 between state routes 84 and 85, a section of roadway that spans San Mateo and Santa Clara counties.

As always, the safety of our employees is our first priority. Thank you for your patience and understanding. California Highway Patrol (CHP) is working with Apple to investigate.

While the exact method by which the buses are being attacked remains unclear, that fact that real damage has been done is not.

"[We're] taking the precaution of re-routing shuttles as we hear of any incidents", Google wrote an in an internal email, according to Mashable.

The shuttle buses were not marked with the logo of the tech company using them. Some believe these buses have become a constant reminder of the gentrification in and around Silicon Valley, however, and they have been the focus of protests in the past.

The buses typically do not bear names of companies, but acronyms for destinations that appear on the vehicle's digital banners can indicate to which tech campus they travel.

At least five buses used to transport Apple employees to the company's headquarters have had their windows smashed by what is suspected to be pellet guns during the last week. One incident reportedly happened outside Los Altos Hills, while another took place near the town of Woodside.

However, the buses of each of the tech firms are a distinct colour: Google's are white, Apple's are silver and Facebook's are blue.
