This is an interesting move by Amazon as they're clearly targeting some 600 million Singapore residents, but they still don't have their own Amazon country site.

Fresh from its earlier Prime Now launch in Singapore, Amazon now wants its customers in the island country to hop on its Prime service at S$8.99 a month ($6.70).

Prime members here are eligible for free worldwide shipping on orders above $60 of more than five million items from Amazon's USA store, which are available on the Singapore Prime Now mobile app.

In July, the retailer added a two-hour delivery service in Southeast Asia as it is putting more effort into a market that could be very profitable for it.

But customers who do not have a Prime membership in the United States can enjoy free delivery within the country for orders totalling US$25 or more on eligible items.

The Prime launch, a first in Southeast Asia, will see Amazon expanding its reach in the region even as Chinese rival Alibaba already sells merchandise from its online Taobao stores through a regional e-commerce subsidiary, Lazada.

Speaking to The Straits Times, Amazon Prime International's vice president Jamil Ghani noted that the Prime membership is country-specific and not transferable at all - those who already have US Prime memberships can not convert them to local ones, and vice versa. From this week, however, it is offering its full Prime bundle which includes free global shipping on orders over SG$40 and subscriptions to its Prime Video service and Prime Twitch offering.

Mr Amos Tan, a Singapore Polytechnic senior lecturer in marketing and retail, said Amazon's removal of free shipping for non-members is a way of trying to lock in more customers.

Amazon on Tuesday stopped free shipping options to Singapore for qualifying items over S$168 were reported to be no longer applicable, media reported.

Other shows, movies and more are also available on the Prime Video.

While benefits are only restricted to the mobile app, Ghani said that more will be added in the future for Prime membership in Singapore.
