The freshman accounted for 274 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns as the #23 Bulldogs beat Louisville 31-27 in the TaxSlayer Bowl. Thompson struggled with his accuracy against Ole Miss, but that shouldn't come as a surprise given his lack of experience.

On the surface, the touchdown was great for the Cardinals.

It likely was Lamar Jackson's farewell performance. Head coach Dan Mullen would leave Starkville for the Florida Gators job.

Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson might have played his final game in college football, and while etched his name into the record books in a few more spots, the TaxSlayer Bowl was not the finest performance from the 2016 Heisman Trophy victor and 2017 Heisman Trophy finalist. The defensive squad is now ranked in the Top 15 nationally in three categories, including total defense (10th - 302.0), pass defense (13th - 175.0) and opponent third-down conversion (12th -.312).

Jackson ran 24 times for 158 yards and a touchdown, breaking the TaxSlayer Bowl record for most rushing yards by a quarterback.

Louisville enters play at 8-4 (4-4) on the season.

Thompson completed 11 of 20 passes for 127 yards. So we knew he had to run the ball today. West Virginia's Pat White set the previous mark with 145 yards in 2007.

For new Mississippi State coach Joe Moorhead, this game is incredibly encouraging for the future of the Bulldogs program.

Jackson, who finished third in this year's Heisman voting, entered Saturday's game with 67 passing touchdowns and 49 rushing. He also broke his own school records for rushing yards and yards from scrimmage. Jackson became the third player in Football Bowl Subdivision history with at least 50 touchdown passes and 50 touchdown runs, joining Florida's Tim Tebow and Nevada's Colin Kaepernick. He has also rushed for 1,400-plus yards and 17 touchdowns. He also has a rushing score, so that playing experience could be beneficial, especially considering the Cardinals open next season against perennial power Alabama in nearby Orlando on September 1.
