As Harrison's agent, Bill Parise, explained to ESPN's Josina Anderson, that track record of success under head coach Bill Belichick was an obvious selling point for the 39-year-old free agent.

Harrison posted a picture of he and Brady from the Patriots locker room to Instagram with the caption: Finally.

By acquiring Harrison, New England has not only the oldest offensive player in the league, Brady, but also the oldest defensive player.

To make room on their roster, the Patriots released linebacker Trevor Reilly.

But the Patriots might have a far different motivation for adding Harrison for the stretch run.

A day before, Tomlin had said following Pittsburgh's 34-6 win over Houston that clinched a first-round playoff bye that hard decisions such as this are "just life in football".

The Patriots are in a position to benefit from help at the line-backing level with Kyle Van Noy dealing injury and Dont'a Hightower sidelined for the season.

Harrison visited Gillette Stadium on Tuesday after being released by the Steelers on Friday.

New England can seal the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a victory over the New York Jets on Sunday. Those two teams are clearly the class of the AFC this season, with only the Jaguars (10-5) at double digit wins entering Week 17.

The Patriots and Steelers are both 12-3 and have wrapped up first-round byes.

For his career, Harrison has 82.5 sacks and 570 tackles in 15 seasons, 14 of which were spent in Pittsburgh, the other in Cincinnati.
