"Influenza vaccination remains the first line of defense against the influenza illness", said Christine Schuyler, county director of Health and Human Services.

Open visitation will resume as soon as health officials determine the flu threat has abated, the release states.

The flu season is off to a strong start, with 21 states reporting "high" flu-like activity.

Signs and symptoms of the flu include fever or feeling feverish, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue and possibly vomiting and diarrhea.

In the USA, influenza activity has significantly increased over recent weeks with the Influenza A (H3N2) virus strain predominating.

There were 121 new cases of the disease were confirmed this week; including nearly 20 people hospitalized and one death.

"We're starting to see flu cases increase here in IL just like every state across the nation", Arnold said.

"We all know the flu shot is not 100 per cent but it's still the best protection out there that we know of so we still recommend the flu shot". Last week, the death toll from the flu outbreak in the county reached 11.

Overall vaccine effectiveness against all circulating flu viruses last season was 39 percent, according to the CDC.

"Older adults, individuals with chronic health conditions, pregnant women, young children and infants are more vulnerable to flu illness".
