Florida Gas Prices Drop to Lowest Since August: AAA

This past week, the national average gas price dropped three cents, but some Midwestern states saw pump prices dip by as much as 10 cents per gallon, according to AAA. The Florida average is falling at a rate of a penny per day.

The Great Lakes market is the most volatile and OH last week saw the average price for gas drop about 4.5 percent, or 10 cents per gallon, to $2.24 per gallon.

The cost of gas has now declined for five straight weeks, AAA said, as refineries are producing more than drivers are buying.

"Forty-four percent of the Washington metro area's 6,131,977 residents plan to take a trip for the Christmas/New Year's holiday travel period with 91 percent of them traveling by vehicle", said John B. Townsend II, AAA Mid-Atlantic's Manager of Public and Government Affairs.

In September gas stations in San Antonio and across Texas were hit with shortages due to Hurricane Harvey related refinery outages and gas prices spiked.

As more than 97 million motorists prepare to hit the road for the Christmas or New Year's holidays ahead, gas prices in Chattanooga are still 9.6 cents per gallon above a year ago. In Newland, around 2.37 a gallon, and in West Jefferson around 2.18 a gallon. The busy holiday driving season will continue to be the most expensive in years as prices remain high after Hurricane Harvey.

States with the highest average gas prices: Hawaii ($3.25), California ($3.13), Alaska ($3.12), Washington ($2.91), OR ($2.74), Pennsylvania ($2.71), Nevada ($2.71), CT ($2.68), NY ($2.64) and Montana ($2.60). "However, the strong supply of gasoline should help stave off any gas price hikes that would otherwise be caused by such a surge in demand", Jenkins said.
