First CT flu death of the season confirmed

Dr. Karen Shelton, the health director for the Mt. Rogers Health District, said Thursday marked a change in the presence of influenza across the commonwealth. Given what they are seeing, officials say the season might be a bit early this year.

She says it surrounding states such as OH and IL are seeing the flu hit right now. Last year, flu remained widespread for 16 weeks, or through the beginning of April. Get your flu shot today and do your part in preventing a more serious flu outbreak for everyone. Of those 250 centers, its Virginia locations are experiencing the highest rates of ILI.

Patel said all three of these targeted flu strains bring about pretty much the same flu symptoms: abrupt onset of fever, head and body aches, fatigue, extreme stuffiness and sore throat. As health officials rushed to contain the outbreak, the CDC admitted that the 2014 flu vaccine did not protect well against H3N2 - it had just seven percent chance of protection.

H1N1, not surprisingly, still rings a bell with many people from the fall of 2009 scare, and all the clinics that were set up to get last-minute vaccine to children and those at risk as soon as possible. "Younger girls and boys can get the vaccine as a nasal spray rather than a jab but having one can make a huge difference". Serious complications of flu include a painful ear infection, acute bronchitis and pneumonia.

Another common question is "why do I have to do this every year?" The serum that is created for the new season's flu shots is based upon educated guesses and projections. For that reason, again the CDC recommends getting the flu shot. Although the flu virus typically peaks between December and February in the USA, a year ago was one of the latest peaks on record and did not occur until mid-March. The same vaccine is being used in the United States.

"We want to protect our family, friends and community from illness during this special time of year and throughout the winter months when the risk for influenza is typically the greatest", said TDH Commissioner John Dreyzehner, MD, MPH.

Recombinant and cell-based platforms are two other vaccine technologies now available.

Steven O'Marro, an infection preventionist, says despite possibly being less effective, the flu shot still serves a goal.

With fears an outbreak of the H3N2 "Aussie flu" strain could hit the United Kingdom swirling around recently here's everything you need to know. Experts are predicting this can be an unusually harsh flu season because of the fact that the flu vaccine is not that effective.

"They have a less tropical climate, one that's more like ours", Patel said in a news release. "That is absolutely false". Individuals who wish to receive the flu shot from their doctor will need to contact their healthcare provider directly about the availability of flu vaccine.

Getting the flu vaccine will not give you the flu. This can often last several days.
