Erica Garner, the daughter of Eric Garner, who was killed in a chokehold by a New York Police Department officer in 2014, died Saturday after a heart attack. "No one gave her justice".

Chokeholds are prohibited by the NYPD, and a ruling by the New York City medical examiner found Eric Garner died due to "compression of neck (choke hold)".

She had been in a coma since 23 December after suffering a heart attack triggered by an asthma attack.

Garner's official Twitter account, run by her family and friends since she became ill, asked that she be remembered as a mother, daughter, sister and aunt with a heart "bigger than the world".

Hearts are heavy today as reports poured in that activist and eldest daughter of slain Staten Island man Eric Garner, Erica Garner, has died.

He was selling loose cigarettes on the sidewalk outside a store at the time.

During the 2016 United States presidential campaign, Garner endorsed the bid of Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders to become the Democratic presidential candidate and slammed the Clinton campaign when leaked emails revealed they were discussing how to use her father's death as political capital.

Mr Garner's death was ruled a homicide by medical examiners, but a grand jury did not charge any arresting officers in the case.

Prior to her death, Erica was an outspoken critic of police brutality and state-sanctioned violence following the death of her father in July 2014.

"My thoughts are with Erica Garner", he said. She endorsed Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders for president and appeared in an campaign advertisement for the senator from Vermont, who posted a statement on Twitter earlier in the week in response to the news about her health.
