2 militants, trooper killed in Indian-controlled Kashmir gunfight

Two militants and a soldier were killed in an encounter that raged after Lashkar-e-Toiba militants attacked an army convoy at Qazigund area on Srinagar-Jammu national highway in south Kashmir's Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.

According to a police official, militants opened fire on an Army convoy, which was on its way to Srinagar.

"(An) army convoy on its way to Srinagar fired at by terrorists near Qazigund area at 1240 hrs.

The security forces retaliated ensuing in an encounter, they said.

Meanwhile, region's Police Chief, Shesh Paul Vaid said they have recovered two bodies of militants.

Sources said two civilians were hit by pellets while the third one sustained a bullet injury during the clashes.

"The gunfight began after contingents of army and police cordoned off the locality especially the suspected house", Ghulam Hassan, a local told Xinhua.

However, an official of the Indian army claimed that the martyred youth were killed in an exchange of fire.

The house in which the militants were hiding was razed to ground during the gunfight. Four protesters were injured during clashes and firing by security forces. He said the search operation is on.
