Six Lashkar militants killed in Hajin gunfight

"Six LeT terrorists have been eliminated in Bandipora encounter", Vaid said.

As soon as the Police and security forces laid siege to a cluster of houses, the holed up terrorists opened fire that triggered a fierce gunfight.

Director General of Police SP Vaid, in a tweet on micro-blogging website, Twitter, wrote: "One of the terrorist named Owaid is son of Zakir Rehman Maki and nephew of Zakir Rehman Lakhvi (alleged mastermind of Mumbai attacks)".

Defence spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia said that an IAF garud commando was killed and another army soldier injured in the encounter in Hajin.

An Indian Air Force (IAF) commando was also martyred in the operation.

An Air Force commando, who was also part of the operation, lost his life. Some police officers said that this is one of a big setback for the terrorists as the same area had witnessed a series of attacks on security forces by terrorists.

Indian Army and police have claimed recovery of weapons and ammunition from the gunfight site.

On Saturday, the Indian security forces killed 6 terrorists in Kashmir's Bandipore district. It was in this village that Commanding Officer of CRPF 45 Bn Chetan Cheetah had got critically injured even as three soldiers of Army got killed and 8 personnel injured on February 14, 2017. He said all the six slain militants were Pakistani nationals. The cordon led to a gunfight in which six militants and the IAF commando were killed. "Mehmood took over when Musaib (another close relative of Lakhvi) was killed by the forces in Hajin in January", he said. Prior to that, two terrorists had got killed in an encounter in Bonikhan Hajin on November 22, 2016.
