Mt Nittany Medical Center and JC Blair Memorial Hospital each earned a "B". "It ends up being a strategic decision, "how much effort do I want to spend on this?'", he said".

"What we've learned is that transparency has a real impact on patient safety", she said.

Based on that data, Leapfrog measures 27 aspects of patient health and safety. Despite the relatively small fluctuations in performance among hospitals overall, Binder said she has noticed consistent performance improvement among hospitals in certain states. Rhode Island had the most dramatic improvement, jumping from 50th in 2012 to number one in the fall of 2017.

MI fell in state rankings from 19th in fall 2016 to 25th in spring 2017 in percentage of hospital with an "A" grade. Other states with significant improvement include OR, going from 48th in 2012 to eighth today, Hawaii from 36th to third, Wisconsin from 44th to sixth, and Idaho from 19th to fourth.

Rhode Island, Maine, Hawaii, Idaho and Virginia are the states with the highest percentage of "A"-ranked hospitals".

Leapfrog says you can use the ratings to find hospitals that prioritize patient safety, meaning hospitals got better grades if they had track records for preventing hospital-acquired infections, hand washing, stopping bed sores, training doctors, communicating about prescriptions and more. "Hospitals have come together whether as hospital engagement networks, or collaboratives". Maryland hospitals - which previously had been the only hospitals exempt from public reporting at the national level due to a federal waiver - performed poorly in their first grading, ranking Maryland among the bottom 10 states.

How safe Beaufort County hospitals keep you from errors, injuries and infections depends on which one you're a patient at, according to a report released Tuesday.

Memorial Hospital of South Bend, Lakeland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, and Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne all received A grades.

WellStar Douglas and WellStar Paulding hospitals remain in the top of the class, ranked with the safest hospitals in Georgia by Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, a news release stated. "Patient safety is patient safety".
