A court in Milan has sentenced former Brazil forward Robinho to nine years in prison for sexual assault, according to Italian news agency ANSA.

A statement on Robinho's Instagram page on Thursday night said that he had "already defended himself against the charges, maintaining that he played no part in the incident".

Robinho, 33, who now plays with Atletico Mineiro in Brazil, pleaded not guilty via his lawyer and never appeared at any of the court hearings in northern Italy.

Reports in Italy claim the former Manchester City and Real Madrid star, along with five others, was implicated for an attack on an Albanian girl in a Milan nightclub in January 2013.

He however has the right of appeal and until the process is followed, the sentence can not take effect.

'All legal steps are already being taken in response to this decision'.

A lack of discipline, however, began to dog Robinho, and he was soon returning to Santos before a spell in Italy where the assault took place.

He has made 100 worldwide appearances for Brazil.

He now plies his trade back in his homeland with Atletico Mineiro.

That sparkling form led him to Real Madrid, where he starred for three seasons before earning a lucrative move to Manchester City in 2008.
