'On Transgender Day of Remembrance, the United States honors the memory of the many transgender individuals who have lost their lives to acts of violence, ' Tillerson wrote in a statement.

Since 2014, November 20 has been marked as a day to remember those wonderful individuals whose lives were taken too soon by anti-trans violence.

Tillerson's statement condemned the violence against transgender individuals, saying that they "should not be subjected to violence or discrimination".

Gwendolyn Ann Smith founded the day in 1999 to honor the 1998 murder of transgender woman Rita Hester. 'Often these attacks are perpetrated by government officials, undermining the rule of law'. "These principles are inherent in our own Constitution and drive the diplomacy of the United States".

AP noted that The Human Rights Campaign, in a report released Friday, calculated that 102 transgender people have been killed in the US over the past five years - including 25 this year.

Sadly, 2017 has already seen at least 25 transgender people fatally shot or killed by other violent means. A report from past year by the group Transgender Europe found that over 2,000 trans people have been killed since 2008.

This report includes the names of every transgender and gender non-conforming person killed as a result of their gender identity. Roughly a third of transgender people live in poverty, and an estimated 50 percent will experience violence by an intimate partner in their lifetimes.

Mermaids, a charity that supports trans and gender non-conforming children and their families has reported a significant increase in calls to their helpline over the previous year. In August, President Donald Trump proposed a ban on transgender individuals entering the military ― a proposal that was shortly thereafter blocked by a district court.
