Former Massachusetts governor and failed president candidate Mitt Romney took opportunity to weigh in on the whole Roy Moore matter - the one that finds him ensnarled in a web of allegations of sexual improprieties with underage and young girls - and call for the former Alabama judge to immediately "step aside" and abandon his Senate aspirations.

Steve Bannon, the former White House chief strategist who backed Moore's candidacy, condemned the Washington Post as part of the "opposition party" after it made the allegations public. I think someone should prosecute and go after them.

Some politicians are casting doubt on the women's stories, while others are expressing dismay - and, in some cases, Republican officials are defending Moore's alleged actions as not problematic at all.

Democrats familiar with the campaign being run by their nominee, Doug Jones, said no new ad buys or investments were planned to take advantage of the story. Luther Strange in the GOP primary in September to fill the seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

No matter what happens, Moore will remain on the ballot on December 12 since a candidate's name can not be removed within 76 days of the election, according to the office of Alabama's secretary of state. State auditor Jim Ziegler says "Mary was a teenager and Joseph was an adult carpenter", suggesting that Roy Moore acted in a divine tradition if he in fact made sexual advances toward a 14-year-old girl. But that didn't stop Alabama Republicans from making him their Senate nominee a year later. Moore has vehemently denied the allegation.

A spokesman for the state Democratic Party said Rep.

In response to the allegations, Becky Ashley said: "I don't believe them at all". National liberal organizations know their chosen candidate Doug Jones is in a death spiral, and this is their last ditch Hail Mary'.

I am pulling my endorsement and support for Roy Moore for U.S. Senate. He denies the women's reports and says he won't quit the race.

Moore released a fundraising pitch featuring Lee on Thursday just hours after The Washington Post story quoted a woman charging that Moore inappropriately her when she was 14 years old. "So I just wonder if it's, you know, maybe these are just the times we are in right now". The age of consent in Alabama is 16. She described meeting Moore, who was then an assistant district attorney, at the courthouse in Etowah County, Ala., where he offered to watch her while her mother attended a custody hearing.

Moore continues to do well with Alabama's evangelicals, who seem as a voting bloc to be prepared to accept virtually anything of late, but he is being outperformed by Trump among every other group.

Reynolds says the timing of the allegations in a report from The Washington Post is too coincidental, with only a month left in the campaign.

On his Senate campaign website, Moore said he was suspended "for upholding the sanctity of marriage as between one man and one woman".
