Well that didn't last long.

In Virginia, today's average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.30, 32 cents above what it was past year on this same day. Nationally, prices have fallen 3.9 cents per gallon to $2.49.

27, the national gas price average stood at $2.51, three cents less than last Monday.

So far in 2017, gas prices have strayed from their typical trends, AAA said. That's unchanged from last week. AAA analysts found gas for as low as $2.33 and as high as $2.65. "However, the oil and gasoline markets are likely to be volatile this week, and prices could face additional upward pressure as we creep closer to the OPEC meeting". It's also 40 cents higher than the price in Rhode Island was a year ago at this time: $2.20 per gallon.

The lowest price available without a wholesale club membership in Palm Beach County was at BP at Lake Worth and Haverhill roads in Greenacres, GasBuddy reported. In fact, current prices rank five of the regions states as the top most expensive states in the country: Alaska ($3.26), Hawaii ($3.24), California ($3.19), Washington ($2.99) and OR ($2.84). Numerous other stations in the surrounding area were selling at prices ranging from $2.32 and $2.35. Historically, year-end gas prices tend to be relatively cheap due to a drop-off in fall gasoline demand around Labor Day and the move to cheaper to produce winter-blend gasoline in mid-September.

Gas prices in states within the West Coast region are among the most expensive in the country.
