Hope Solo, the former longtime U.S. Women's National Team goalkeeper, says ex-FIFA president Sepp Blatter touched her inappropriately just before the two went on stage at an awards ceremony in 2013.

A growing number of public figures have been accused of sexual harassment in recent weeks, sparked by multiple women speaking out against the Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein. The newspaper published an excerpt from that conversation on Friday.

Solo told Portugese publication Expresso that Blatter grabbed "my ass" at the January 2013 Ballon d'Or ceremony.

"I had Sepp Blatter grab my ass", Solo told Expresso.

Blatter is already serving a ban from Federation Internationale de Football Association after he was ousted for a variety of crimes that rocked worldwide soccer in recent years, but the serious accusation from Solo is an entirely new wrong for Blatter. I've seen it among players in the locker room. She said she's seen inappropriate behavior from coaches, doctors, press officers - and between players.

Blatter's spokesman shut down the allegations and denied that the incident took place. "Yes, everybody has [the right to make] their individual decisions, and it is uncomfortable, but I wish more women, especially in football, would speak against it, about their experiences, because some of those people still work there and some of the players still act [like that]".

Solo was also asked why she hadn't spoken out about the incident before.

"I usually speak directly with the person". I didn't get to tell him directly, 'Don't ever touch me!' That's the way I've always handled things.

"I had to quickly pull myself together to present my team-mate with the biggest award of her career and celebrate with her in that moment, so I completely shifted my focus to Abby".

Blatter was suspended from office and banned from soccer for six years following allegations of a widespread corruption scandal that came to light in 2015.

"Let the women play in more feminine clothes like they do in volleyball", Blatter said.
