Hillary slams Trump, Moore over sexual misconduct allegations

With the country confronting revelations of sexual impropriety by powerful men in entertainment and politics, Trump's status as someone accused months before the recent wave of news stories is also a complication for the White House.

After Trump denied having done what he bragged about doing, several women came forward to accuse the Republican of sexual misconduct.

Sanders did say, however, that a Senate investigation into the allegations against Franken were an "appropriate action". White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said a couple of weeks ago that those accusers were lying, but Trump faces a defamation lawsuit from one of the women, Summer Zervos, for making just that claim.

Some responded to Trump's tweets by citing the allegations against the president. And he called the women sharing #MeToo stories about sexual assault, harassment and other misconduct "courageous".

The clock is tracking the time since Trump returned from his 12-day trip across Asia, during which he promised to comment on the allegations facing Moore once he returned to the U.S. Al Franken (D-MN) forcibly kissed and groped Leeann Tweeden in 2006.

The "Lesley Stahl tape" Trump mentions is a reference to a 1995 NY magazine story about Saturday Night Live depicting Franken telling a joke about raping 60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl. Tweeden said in a CNN interview that she accepted the apology.

Franken's alleged misconduct occurred not long after he had moved home to Minnesota from NY, and was already positioning himself to run for Senate in 2008, a race that he narrowly won after a recount. McConnell, Moore's establishment nemesis, is a subject of disdain to conservative media outlets such as Breitbart and Trump's most fervent backers, giving Trump reason to stay out of their fray. "Roy Moore's spent more time chatting up young girls at the mall than Santa Claus". The White House said Trump supported the RNC's decision, which came as the party absorbed polling data showing Moore trailing Democrat Doug Jones in the Republican stronghold.
