Lebanon's Saad al-Hariri, who resigned as prime minister on November 4, has met Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for talks in a brief Cairo stopover before a planned return to Lebanon, Egypt state media said on Tuesday.

They will address the "latest developments in the region and developments of the Lebanon situation", a statement from Egypt's presidency said.

According to Lebanon's Almustaqbal newspaper, which cites the Lebanese prime minister's press service, Saad Hariri will meet Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Sisi during his upcoming visit to Egypt.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun has not recognized the resignation of Hariri, echoing Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah's concerns that the statement could have been made under pressure by the Saudi authorities. His failure to return to Lebanon since then had sparked rumors he was being held in Riyadh against his will, which both he and Saudi officials have since denied.

"As you know I have resigned and we will talk about this matter in Lebanon", Hariri said.

He went immediately to the presidential palace, it said.

All sides in Beirut have called for his speedy return.

Policies by the young Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman risk destabilising the region, Straw said at a conference on Saudi Arabia hosted by Middle East Monitor on Saturday. It said in its Tuesday edition that French and Egyptian officials discussed Lebanon's future in the Cypriot capital Nicosia on the sidelines of el-Sissi's visit to the European Union member Mediterranean island nation.

News of the joint Egypt-French effort to persuade Hariri to find a way out of the crisis was reported by Al-Akhbar, an authoritative Beirut daily that takes an anti-Saudi stand.

Mr Hariri caused a political crisis when he quit during a visit to Riyadh. El-Sissi returned home from Cyprus on Tuesday afternoon.
